The quarterly national accounts are relevant for anyone working with short-term and cyclical macroeconomic conditions. The use of the quarterly accounts ranges by the economic ministries for planning, analysis, forecasting, and modelling purposes, to similar uses by business organisations and other interest groups, as well as for the public’s interest in understanding the structure and development of the economy.
Feedback from users is continuously evaluated through the Economic Statistics user Committee, user group meetings, direct contact with users, and through international forums.
User Needs
The quarterly national accounts are used primarily for monitoring and analysing current business cycle developments. The data from the quarterly accounts also serve as a basis for preparing economic forecasts, for the authorities’ work on the national budget, and for economic planning in general.
Annual and quarterly national accounts figures also constitute an important part of the data foundation for analyses of the economic structure of the country and make it possible to compare the Danish economy with those of other countries. National accounts data therefore have a wide user base — from ordinary citizens who occasionally seek information about society, to public and private institutions that actively use the figures from the national accounts in their ongoing work.
Among other things, Statistics Denmark’s macroeconomic model, ADAM, is based on national accounts statistics. Other central users include the Ministry of Finance, the central bank of Denmark, Danmarks Nationalbank, research institutions, and financial analysts. In addition, international organisations such as the IMF, OECD, World Bank, United Nations, and Eurostat use national accounts data in their statistics and analyses.
User Satisfaction
Statistics Denmark has several forums in which key users of the national accounts and related statistics can participate, for example:
Economic Statistics user Committee
The Advisory Committee on Economic Statistics has the following overall tasks:
- To discuss and evaluate the results achieved and the planned developments in economic statistics
- To discuss users’ use of economic statistics and their needs for new statistics
- To discuss the quality, documentation, and dissemination of economic statistics

User meetings on quarterly national accounts
In connection with the flash release (50 days after the end of the recent quarter) of the quarterly national accounts, information meetings are held where members of the Advisory Committee on Economic Statistics have the opportunity to ask questions and receive further explanations about the latest figures.
