Target 14.5: Conserve coastal and marine areas
By 2020, conserve at least 10 per cent of coastal and marine areas, consistent with national and international law and based on the best available scientific information.

14.5.1: Protected marine key biodiversity areas

Definition
The indicator shows the mean percentage of each Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) that is covered by designated protected areas and/or Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs).
Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) are areas, that contribute significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity defined by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)and documented in the World Database of KBAs (WDKBA) (www.keybiodiversityareas.org/kba-data). KBA’er udgør en femtedel af danmarks marine områder (2024).
Protected areas are clearly defined geographical spaces, recognized, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values. OECMs are defined as “A geographically defined area other than a Protected Area, which is governed and managed in ways that achieve positive and sustained long-term outcomes for the in-situ conservation of biodiversity, with associated ecosystem functions and services and where applicable, cultural, spiritual, socio–economic, and other locally relevant values. For more information read Metadata SDG 14.5.1.
Unit of measure: Percent (Mean percentage of each marine KBA covered by (i.e. overlapping with) protected areas and/or OECM.)
