Definition

The number of people in Denmark who become infected with HIV has been declining over time. In addition, Denmark reached an important public health milestone at the beginning of 2026. Denmark is the first country in the EU to have eliminated mother-to-child transmission of both HIV and syphilis (WHO, 2026).

Data source: UNAIDS (retrieved from the UN’s global SDG database). Esti-mates from UNAIDS are based on Spectrum modeling, which combines na-tional data, surveillance data, survey data, and region-specific assumptions about the HIV epidemic. National data for Denmark are collected and reported to UNAIDS by the Statens Serum Institut. Read more about the indicator’s definition and methodology here.

Additional information about HIV in Denmark can be found at the Statens Serum Institut; see, for example, the newsletter "EPI-NYT", which communicates knowledge about the surveillance and prevention of infectious diseases, in-cluding HIV. The annual HIV report is a more detailed publication on people living with HIV in Denmark. Data on diseases in sundhedsdatabank.dk (health data bank) show the total number of people diagnosed with HIV, including both new and exist-ing cases.
